Cigar smoker and author

If you walk – or scoot in my case – along the promenade in front of West Cross you’ll notice a blue plaque.

As you can tell it’s been there for a while and, while I was aware vaguely of Ms Dillwyn, I’d never noticed the author bit of her credentials, although it seems she had a good reputation.

Three of her novels, The Rebecca Rioter, A Burglary, and Jill, have now been republished by Honno, the Welsh women’s press.

Themes of her books include criticism of her upper class society, the need for social reform, unrequited -probably lesbian – love, and feminism. I think I shall have to see if the library has them in stock. (After lockdown of course.)

When her father and brother died she was forced to leave the family home because it was entailed to the male line, but she had to take on her father’s huge debts! No wonder she adopted feminism with such spirit.
