It’s been a long time! What can I say? Life gets in the way.

It’s not that I’ve not been writing; I have. I’ve completed my latest novel, begun another, continued to work on and finished another ghost-written autobiography, written a monthly column for a local magazine, and had lots of fun with grandchildren.

But book marketing and promotion and all the sorts of things you have to do to become a successful author are low down on my list. Trying to promote my books to others seems like an imposition, one I fear could become a nagging itch that won’t go away. At least with my way of doing it i.e. not doing it, there’s no fear of that!

But I really must tell you about my newest novel, published officially on 18th April 2024. It’s a slight change of direction for me in that there are bad guys and even shooting in it, but it’s all done in a light-hearted way. I struggle to be serious for too long so though there are some really nasty types in this story I hope the presence of the good guys – and the dog – lightens the mood.

When I face-time with my grandchildren in Italy the first question from them is, ‘Where’s Little Mouse?’ They don’t want to talk to Granny; they want Little Mouse to go on an adventure with them!

I’d been thinking about writing a little story for them but hadn’t done anything about it but then I went for my Covid booster. Standing in a very long winding queue with nowhere to sit and nothing to do I began to jot down notes and ideas, and finally published the book a week ago.

It’s not for sale – well, it is in that it’s on Amazon – but I mean that my primary, main, probably sole market is my grandchildren. But I thought as this is my author website I should include it here, if only for my own reference. When I’m old and grey – okay, when I stop dying my hair – I can look back and think, ‘Oh yes, I used to write books.’

As you may have read elsewhere I’ve taken a completely different direction with my writing by writing for young teens – more specifically for my 11-year-old grand-daughter. But a book is a book and as it’s there I might as well try to sell some copies!

Called The Tree, Granny, and Me, it’s in diary form and is narrated by Alysha, the ‘Me’ of the title. Granny’s favourite tree is going to be cut down to make way for a new housing estate. Granny is up in arms and sets about organising protest marches and sit-ins, with the help of her neighbours in the retirement village.

Alysha rallies her friends around to help as well and between them they come up with some great ideas. But will it be enough to save Granny’s tree? And whose side is Mum on anyway?
